There are only 12 peaks in California that exceed 14,000 feet in elevation.

As the year winds down, we’re approaching one of my favorite annual traditions: our troop potluck on December 15th. Since it’s coming up in just two weeks, I’m sending this early so everyone has plenty of time to plan.
This potluck is a great opportunity to share a small part of yourself with our troop, whether that’s a cultural dish, a family staple, or simply something you love to eat. I always enjoy seeing the variety of foods people bring and getting to connect with everyone through what they choose to share, so please don't hesitate to bring something meaningful of yourself.

We have secured up to 15 permit spots to hike and camp within the Whitney Zone on the weekend of May 31st. Mt. Whitney (elevation 14,500 ft) is the highest mountain in the lower 48 states & overnight camping permits are very hard to get. Given that this is very early in the season, it is unlikely that conditions will be safe enough for us to attempt to reach the summit.
Nevertheless, this will be a beautiful trip to a much sought-after section of the California High Sierra.
NOTE: This will be a challenging backpack with 3,700 feet of elevation gain at high altitude (up to 12,000 feet). This trip is not appropriate for inexperienced backpackers.

As always, our troop will be marching in the La Canada Flintridge Fiesta Days Memorial Day Parade. Our meeting place is typically the lower parking lot of the Foothill Executive Plaza, 1150 Foothill Blvd, La Canada. Scouts should be there by about 9:45 am (after that they start to close the area to traffic). The parade starts at 10:30 am. We will march down Foothill Boulevard between Cornishon Avenue and Gould Road.
Parents must plan to pick up their scouts at the southern side of Foothill Blvd at Gould. The time we'll finish depends on when our place in line but typically around 11:30.
Scouts need to be in full class A uniform, including neckerchiefs, and sashes if they have them. Adults are welcome to join as well if they wear a class A uniform. There is no cost to participate.

Day Option 1: Merit Badge Combo This option will allow scouts who already have the Kayaking merit badge to complete the requirements for the Whitewater merit badge. If the scout does not yet have the Kayaking merit badge, they can still select this option. They will receive a partial for the Whitewater merit badge and if they later complete the kayaking merit badge, they will then receive Whitewater as well. The program will begin at 9:00 am, with participants kayaking the rapids in the morning, eating lunch (included), and then rafting in the afternoon. The program lasts approximately 6 hours. (Note: last spring the high water levels precluded kayaking and everyone rafted all day).
Day Option 2: High Adventure This option is for the older scouts. Participants will start at 8:30 am with a discussion on paddling in rapids. The group will then take a first run on smaller rapids to allow the guides to ensure that everyone can handle the paddling. A bus will then take the group farther up the river than the other groups for 3-4 runs (depending on water speed) in class 3-4 rapids. This trip will last for 6-7 hours and will include lunch. To select this option, you must be at least 13 years old, a strong swimmer, and have the strength to handle several hours of strenuous paddling.
Day Option 3: Hiking and wildlife observation. This option is free and you need at least 2 adults on trail or campsite.

I am currently fundraising for my Eagle Project, which will help the Pasadena Humane Society, a non-profit animal shelter and clinic.
The recent Eaton fires have been devastating to our community, and the Pasadena Humane Society has stepped up to help out many families in need, providing a shelter for pets whose owners don't have a place to live. They also acted as a burn unit for animals hurt by the fires. Combined with the upcoming "kitten season," they expect at least 1000 kittens and cats coming in, so they need more help than ever.
My project will be making cat beds and toys for these cats and kittens, giving burned or lonely cats a sense of home and comfort. I will host a donation drive at the troop meetings, including for cat food, litter, and toys. I will also be selling chips, soda, baked goods, and possibly candy.
The donation drive and snack sales will be on these dates: May 5th, May 12th, and May 19th.

I'm excited to announce that I have raised all the funds needed to begin my Eagle project. My project is all about supporting the recovery efforts for the Hahamongna Native Plant Nursery, which helps restore the Arroyo Seco watershed. This area was impacted by the Eaton Fire, and the plants and wildlife really need our help.
For my project, I'll be building a "Recovery Corner" to help the nursery raise money by selling plants and other items. The money they make will go toward restoring native plants and protecting the environment in the Arroyo Seco. The nursery is part of the Arroyo Seco Foundation, a nonprofit that's doing awesome work to protect our local watershed and wildlife. We'll be building a cabinet and a bulletin board.

My name is Sophia Shaikh, and I am a Life Scout currently working toward Eagle Rank. As part of this journey, I am carrying out my Eagle Scout service project, which will take place on the weekend of March 8th and 9th at Descanso Gardens.
For my project, we will be refurbishing 14 benches by removing loose bark, sanding them, and applying two coats of linseed oil to enhance their durability against weather damage. This restoration will help ensure the benches remain in good condition for years to come.
